Course Packing List

What you need to bring to the NSC NE Region Trek Leader course.

Gear

Note: The Voyageur Section Requires This List of Gear in addition to that provided to you with your NCS registration documents.

  • Backpack with waterproof liner (garbage bag to fit) *
  • Small Daypack – For both classroom sessions and the field experience.*
  • Compass – Orienteering-style with rectangular plastic base plate *
  • Eating utensils: knife, fork, spoon, cup, plate (e.g. Frisbee) *
  • Firestarter (matches, etc.) *
  • Flashlight (small) or headlamp *
  • Plastic bags – small collection of sealable quart, gallon sizes (e.g., ZipLoc)
  • Pocket knife *
  • Sleeping bag in waterproof stuff sack (use garbage bag inside stuff sack) *
  • Sleeping pad
  • Tent – small with netting, ground sheet (please plan to share tents, space is limited in most Adirondack campsites)
  • Water bottle(s) – Liter size *
  • Whistle on lanyard

Clothing

  • BSA uniform (shirt, shorts & socks) if available (check with employing council) *
  • Comfortable clothing for NCS classroom sessions (cub costume on NCS list is not required for Voyageur section)
  • Hiking boots with change of socks – avoid cotton
  • Hiking togs: nylon pants (long and short – no jeans), shirt, jacket, rainwear
  • Swimsuit *
  • Soft hat with brim / Sun hat
  • Water shoes for canoeing (old running shoes, etc. – they will get wet) *

Personal Items

  • Hand sanitizer (small bottle of alcohol-based gel)
  • Insect repellent & head net – very important *
  • Notepad (steno size) and pencil
  • Personal prescription medications
  • Sunblock
  • Sunglasses
  • Towel, soap, shaver, toothbrush & other personal toiletries
  • Wristwatch
